White Trash by Philippe-AMIOT

1. White Trash Fast Food
This is  a famous and legendary rock club. The name already implies it, they also have a fast food restaurant.
serving the most delicious burgers & fries I have ever had.
What else to expect at the White Trash, great live music & a great rock´n´roll atmosphere!!
2. Organic Market @ Kollwitzplatz

This is how you can spend your Saturday like all the locals living in Prenzlauer Berg. Strawling over the market, buying some things to eat, drinking some coffee or even champagne. At this market, everything is possible! You can even buy clothes and jewelry here, also there are often musicians standing at the ends of the market, playing their songs!! Always a great atmosphere here!!

Berlin Mauerpark fleamarket

Mauerpark Fleamarket

3.Mauerpark Fleamarket
if you are staying over the weekend you absolutely can´t miss out on the mauerpark
fleamarket. Held every Sunday from 7 till 16 it is the place where hip & young Berlin and
Berlin-visitors get together. Not only looking for bargains, also it is a social happening where
friends meet over a bratwurst, or watching one of the many spontaneous concerts from
musicians coming from all over the globe.
4. The new synagoge @ Rykestrasse. It is Germanys biggest synagoge!

This cavernous synagogue is today the largest extant synagogue in
Germany. The handful of worshippers
who gather here on Shabbat, in fact, use a small side chapel, and
the main synagogue is used only for festivals. It is a
beautiful synagogue that retains much of the original interior.
Because of the synagogue’s location in a courtyard surrounded by
housing, it survived Kristallnacht relatively unscathed, and by luck it
was not struck by war-time bombing.

Berlin Wall Documentation Centre

Berlin Wall Documentation Centre

5. Berlin Wall documentation centre
this documentation centre, completely free of charge, is located at the Bernauer Strasse.
It is really not far from your hostel in Prenzlauer Berg, it is approximately a 10 minute walk.
At this documentation center there have  a Tower you should really climb up, because  from above you have a clear view over the berlin wall
(small piece maintained) and the death stripe.
Learn more about Berlins History by paying a visit to this informative little museum.

6. Kulturbrauerei
This huge complex of night-time hangouts originally housed Berlins Schultheiss brewery for more than 150 years. By night the Culture Brewery turns into a popular meeting point for determined drinkers, eager to explore the buildings wealth of bars, clubs, cafes and restaurants, or just hang out in the huge courtyard.
7. Dr. pong
the table tennis bar in berlin. don´t think it is a sportbar ´cause it isn´t. A lot of youngsters meet here to get together! There is nothing more fun than playing table tennis with over 20 people at once! Beside that there are dj´s playing great electronic music! It is a great hangout!
8. Kastanienallee

Dubbed Casting Alley by the locals, this long strip of little cafes, indie fashion designers trading their wares and tasty restaurants is the ideal place to hang out and watch the surprisingly large number of beautiful faces walk by at all hours
9. Zionskirchplatz
Life in a resistance group fighting either the Nazis or East German
government was often a dangerous affair. Finding somewhere quiet and warm to hold your secret
discussions therefore being a number one priority = PBergs 19th century Church of Zion. It is now
surrounded by small cafes and restaurants.
10. Weinerei!
great cozy place, it´s mainly students you will find here. getting together to drink really
great wine and philosophize in a relaxed livingroom-feel atmosphere.
the concept of the weinerei is quite unique. You ´buy´ a glass, for one euro, and then you
can fill and refill it as often as you like. Also there are little snacks the accompany the
wine. when you leave you can pay whatever you think it was worth.
Don´t go here to late, when the wine is out, its over and out!!

Nacht & Nebel Neukölln

Nacht und Nebel Neukölln- A night full of exciting art & culture
This year´s Nacht und Nebel Neukölln takes place on Saturday the 5th of November, it´s the tenth edition of the Neukölln Cultural Festival.

Nacht und Nebel is an ART and Cultural Festival and gives us an insight in the vivid and upcoming artscene in Neukölln. There will be shows and performances in over a 110 different locations in the northern part of Neukölln.

You are curious what is on the menu? Count on dance, workshops, performances, theater, music, film etc. etc. There are all kinds of different exhibitions in the many ateliers, galleries bars and cafe´s in Neukölln.  Expect the unexpected!

Start you night with watching a movie or a theater show and end it on one of the many parties.

An amazing feature of the festival, besides that most of the shows and performances are free of any charge; there is taken care of free transportation by taxis for all the festivals visitors! Feel like a star and let yourself be driven from one location to the next by one of the many special festival cabs, and this service is for free!

Nacht und Nebel starts at 6pm at the Schillerpalais,
Klick here to see the FULL PROGRAMM.
To guide the visitors through the Nacht und Nebel night the organizers created two different routes. To view KLICK HERE. Alongside these 2 routes you will find the special CABS, they will drive you around for free and you can hop on and hop off and move from gallery to bar, to atelier…

The difference to most of the Art-festivals is that during the Nacht & Nebel Night you as a visitor have the opportunity to talk with the different artists. Most of the anticipating artist live in Neukölln, and through their art they reflect on the social-problems in this Berlin neighbourhood.
In this way they pay an important contribution to the local community.
For most of the performances and exhibitions there is no entrance – fee to be payed.

TOP 10 of things to do in Berlin, for FREE!!

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

Summer Berlin

We have made a TOP 10 of amazing things to do in Berlin, all free of charge!!

Berlin is an amazing city, and it doesn´t need to be to expansive to have a good time in Germany´s Capitol! If you are traveling on a budget there are still plenty of cool things to do, that are totally free of any charge!!! Read on and we will give price some of the best things to do, for free!

Here is our TOP 10:
1.Tacheles – One-time department store then SS headquarters in the heart of Berlins
former Jewish quarter, the Tacheles was taken over by squatters in 91. Behind the
buildings bombed out façade is a wealth of art studios.  Just opposite youll find delicious French fries served from a dodgy looking
trailer called Beckers Fritten
2.Gendarmenmarkt – Touted by many guidebooks as the prettiest square in Berlin,
Gendarmenmarkt is famous for its two churches – one Protestant, one Catholic – each
built opposite each other by the opposing religion. Not often that happens. TIP:
Fassbender & Rausch, possibly the worlds greatest chocolate shop, is on the corner of
Gendarmenmarkt
3.Kollwitzplatz – Käthe Kollwitz, the famous left-wing, anti-war artist, would no doubt
take great pride that not only is there a square named after her (complete with bronze
statue) but that its one that was once a meeting point for intellectuals and artists during
Prenzlauer Bergs nasty East Germany days. Dont miss Kollwitzplatz`s famous market on
saturdays
Enjoy amazing cakes and delicious coffee at the Anna Blume café on the corner of
Sredzkistrasse and Kollwitzstrasse.
Just round the corner is Rykestrasse Synagogue, Germany’s largest synagogue.
4.Topography of Terror – Back in 1987 a group of students excavated, with little more than their bare hands, the cellars of Berlins former Gestapo and SS headquarters. The Topography of Terror is the fruit of their labour, an open-air exhibition documenting what happens when a totalitarian regime tortures its people to death for fun.
TIP: Pickup a headset from the reception for English audio commentary.
TIP: Next to the Topography of Terror is an excellent art museum called Martin-Gropius-Bau
5.Reichstag- The German parliament building, re-opened in 1999 after the government
and most of the ministries moved from Bonn to Berlin. British architect Lord Norman Foster
redesigned this place, complete with a huge glass dome with public access, so you can
watch the politicians at work.
You can get in for FREE. Try to avoid the queues at the Reichstag, make a reservation at
Kaefers restaurant at the top of the glass dome. This should get you in the side door.
6.Holocaust Memorial- Berlins ultra-controversial memorial for the murdered Jews of
Europe, 2,711 concrete blocks jutting off at offensive and suffocating angles.
Co-incidentally only a stones throw away from the site of Adolf Hitlers former underground
lair, the Führerbunker.
Walk through the memorial, youll quickly realise its not the kind of place you want to have
a summer picnic at.
7.Free Dinner Party at EastSeven Berlin Hostel

Every Monday an Wednesday we cook a vegetarian meal for all our guests, and it is for free!! We even have a happy hour for beer!!
8.Volkspark Friedrichshain -A beautiful park, excellent for jogging or having a picnic or
barbeque. In the middle you’ll find Friedrichshains highest hill, which provides a 78-metre
high view over Berlins flat terrain. The hill was actually man-made to cover up a destroyed
anti-aircraft bunker from World War II, as well as several tonnes of bombed out rubble.
Also you can play beachvolleyball for free here. They have a special area reserved for
beachsports. Its free to use for anyone but you´d have to bring your own equipment.
9.Fleamarket -Sunday is fleamarket day. Close to the hostel (500 m) you find the
Arkonaplatz Fleamarket and the famous Mauerpark fleamarket. If you don´t want to buy
something – no problem, you first of all go there to see all kind of urban subjects with
hangover and even sober ones. Berliners go there – you should as well, and ofcourse
there is no entrance fee here!
10.Brandenburg Gate -Every 10, 20 and 50 cent German Euro coin is minted with a
picture of this big city gate on its reverse side. Stranded in a lonely no-mans land between
1961 and 89 thanks to the East German government, no other structure in Berlin better
symbolises the temporary division of the city. Just go to foot from Unter den Linden and
take a closer look at this immense Gate. This Beautiful sight in Berlin is also admission
free to visit.
Have fun exploring Berlin on a low budget! If you are still looking for a cheap bed in Berlin you are welcome to stay at our cozy hostel in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg!

A week in Berlin, some amazing things to do!!

Monday, July 18th, 2011

Monday:
Miss any movies last season? – no worries: watch them open air
In 2011 there will again be a daily changing program with highlights from the current cinema season as well as classic and cult movies. With films from countries as diverse as Japan, Norway, Israel, Palestine or Spain we aim to present true world cinema and where possible we present foreign films in original versions with German subtitles and German films with English subtitles.
WHERE: Freiluftkino Kreuzberg
5 minutes  from U-Bhf Kottbusser Tor , am Mariannenplatz | entry opposite Adalbertstraße 73
start: 21:30 – but be there by 21:00 to get tickets
tickets: 6,50 Euro

Tuesday:
At the “Turk’s market” at “Maybachufer” in Berlin Neukölln it is brightly:
Vegetables, Turkish specialties and a lot of fabrics. If you need vegetables or fruits – you won’t get them cheaper anywhere else, esp. if you come close to the ending time.
The market takes place every Tuesday and Friday between 11.00 and 18.30. The market is at line U8 (U-Bhf Schönleinstrasse)

Wednesday:
Explore the district of Kreuzberg with great bars, cheap food and an amazing nightlife
Get there with Tram M10 from Eberswalder Str. and go til the final stop (Tram runs all night long).  Walk into driving direction of the tram over the bridge and go “Schlesisches Tor”
Eat the best Hamburger in town at Burgermeister (in an old toilet building directly underneath the train track – expect waiting time, have a seat and watch the bustling surroundings) or go over to “Bagdad” to eat one of the best Döner Kebaps in town. Or meet some new friends at  “Runde Mini Pizza” (Round Mini Pizza), a store that is doing exactly that and known under that name city-wide. Don’t leave without buying Cookies from the Turkish bakery around the corner (they are baking all night long). A stroll around Schlesische Strasse lets you pass dozens of nice bars, do it like the Berliner’s and buy a cheap beer at the Späti (corner shop) between your bar visits (a local favorite is Sternburg beer for around 70 cents, or buy quality with Augustiner beer). If you walk along Schlesische Strasse you will reach a small canal which once was the border between East and West Berlin (the last remaining sniper tower of the GDR border guards is located here). At the canal you’ll find a nice floating restaurant on a house boat and directly across a nice floating club.
Back at the bridge is the famous Watergate Club, long lines expected, finest electronic music. Opens at midnight but won’t fill up before 02:00. If that is not your style or line is too long, walk back over the bridge and follow the crowd towards Revaler Strasse. There you’ll find the RAW Temple, an old train department now filled with several clubs (all styles) and a paradise for alternative nightlife. Not far away is Simon Dach Strasse, a street dotted with pubs.

If you like electronic music, TRESOR would be an interesting option: located in an old power plant, it is an amazing location. They have one techno floor in the basement and one floor with house, minimal. No dress code, entrance is around 5 €. Doors open at midnight, fills up between 01:00-02:00.
Tresor Club
Köpenicker Str. 70
10179 Berlin
(U8, U-Bahnhof Heinrich-Heine-Strasse)

Thursday:
Yes…we do have beach bars in Berlin…. one of my favorites is at the river by the Eastside Gallerie
Strandbar Oststrand
Mühlenstraße 24-26
10243 Berlin – Friedrichshain

The site of the main remand prison for people detained by the former East German Ministry of State Security (MfS), or ‘Stasi’, has been a Memorial since 1994. Since the vast majority of the buildings, equipment and furniture and fittings have survived intact, the Memorial provides a very authentic picture of prison conditions in the GDR and gives another view of the divided Berlin.

It is only possible to view the extensive prison complex on a official guided tour as Visitors require detailed guidance in order to understand the various sections of the prison.
