transmediale is preparing to get in/compatible in 2012. The theme in/compatible probes the artistic imagination that is developed in a network culture where everything seems to connect, but not all fits in or works together. Under this festival theme we will present a diverse international programme: a two-day thematic symposium, a curated exhibition, an extensive video programme and a performance series which includes the legendary Joshua Light Show. Another highlight is the launch of a new project platform, the reSource for transmedial culture, which will present itself through an experimental programme of workshops, open discussions and performative interventions. The occasion of the 25th anniversary of transmediale will be marked by special screenings and panel discussions. On top of all this, we are partnering up with CTM for a festival Vorspiel consisting of partner events spread all over the city in the weekend immediately preceding our opening.

Berlin: an exciting, cosmopolitan cultural hub that never ceases to attract artists from around the world. A diverse cultural scene, a critical public and an audience of film-lovers characterise the city. In the middle of it all, the Berlinale: a great cultural event and one of the most important dates for the international film industry. Around 300,000 sold tickets, more than 19,000 professional visitors from 115 countries, including 4,000 journalists: art, glamour, parties and business are all inseparably linked at the Berlinale.

Japanese composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda has conceived an exhibition for the
Hamburger Bahnhof that, for the first time, compositionally unites the two symmetrical
halls on the upper level of the museum’s east and west wings. The exhibition’s title “db”
(abbr. for decibel) refers to this symmetry while simultaneously indicating the
complementary relationship between the two exhibition spaces.
Ikeda has designed the white room and the black room as counterparts, not only physically
(brightness, color), but also conceptually and perceptually. The project is a composition in
which time and space are shaped through the most minimal use of sound, light and visual
elements. It is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Germany.
Since the mid-1990s, Ryoji Ikeda (born 1966, lives in Paris) has been among the foremost
international composers and artists in the realm of cutting-edge digital technologies and
their integration into visual and acoustic presentations. His works are based on
spatiotemporal compositions in which the musical and visual material is reduced to a
minimum: sine waves, sound pulses, pixels of light and numerical data. He investigates
sound, time and space on the basis of mathematical methods and transforms them in his
concerts and installations into an intense experience for the audience.
The exhibition “db” by Ryoji Ikeda is the latest project in the “Works of Music by Visual
Artists” series, which Freunde Guter Musik Berlin has presented in collaboration with the
Nationalgalerie Berlin since 1999 and, since 2002, also with MaerzMusik, the
contemporary music festival of the Berliner Festspiele.
A project by Freunde Guter Musik Berlin e.V. in collaboration with Nationalgalerie im
Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin and MaerzMusik 2012 |
Berliner Festspiele.
Made possible by funding from Ernst Schering Foundation and
Hauptstadtkulturfonds. With thanks to Gallery Koyanagi, Tokyo.

From mid November 2011, the Department of the Islamic Orient will unveil its new
permanent exhibition in newly renovated rooms purposefully allotted to its collection.
Ethnographic collections from Islamic societies can now go on public display for the
first time since the museum’s opening in 1970, when it was called the Museum für
Völkerkunde.
Spread over a total of 850 square metres in four exhibition rooms, ‘Muslims’ Worlds’
takes a look at various topics that continue to play an important role in the way
Muslims perceive themselves and others. Architectural structures, such as the richly
decorated wall of a guest house from Afghanistan, serve as the living embodiment of
various topics, for instance the gender-specific use of space and the convention, now
hotly debated, whereby women are consigned to the private sphere and men to the
public.
Magnificent artefacts from Turkestan, now Central Asia, go some way to answering
questions as to what material cultural artefacts are able to tell us of the identity of the
countries they originate from and what significance historical collections have for
these societies now. The complex diversity of the Islamic religion, its orthodox and
mystical aspects, as well as the phenomena of everyday religious practice are
illustrated through a range of objects taken from various Muslim sources.
All areas of the exhibition include interactive media that give visitors the chance to
experience more on the diverse topics and the social debates surrounding them. (text: http://www.smb.museum.de)

Top 10 of events for this weekend in Berlin- from October 22nd till October 24th

Mauerpark fFleamarket

Mauerpark fFleamarket

are you staying in Berlin this weekend? Then read on, because we made a fine selection of coming up events and things to do this friday, satrurday and sunday!

For Friday:

1)FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS 2010

For the sixth time, the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS™ will turn Berlin into a sparkling metropolis with a firework of illuminations and events for two weeks from 13th to 24th October, 2010. Under the auspices of the governing mayor Klaus Wowereit world-famous historical landmarks and spots in Berlin, e.g. the Brandenburg Gate, the Television or Radio Tower will be staged impressively by means of light, events, projections and fireworks. Complementary to the festival, there will be numerous cultural events dealing with the subject “light”.

The Grand Opening on October 13th will be followed by a number of spectacular events this year. Amongst others the Night Of Open Doors will be held on October 16th. On October 22nd it will become jazzy at Jazz at the Ministergardens and romantic at the MoonlightWeddings.
A spectacular finish will be the City LightRun on October 23rd.
During the whole festival you can explore the city on land, water or in the air via LightSeeing.

2)FOURTH EUROPEAN MONTH OF PHOTOGRAPHY BERLIN
15 October to 28 November 2010

This fourth edition of the European Month of Photography Berlin presents itself as a festival in transition. This time the ‘month’ of photography lasts for six weeks, starting – in response to the rhythm of Berlin’s cultural autumn – in mid-October. The biggest change however is the experiment of confronting all participating institutions with a mandatory set theme. The objective was to have all the exhibitions and events focused on a single topic, so as to make the festival more prominent in the public eye and give it a higher profile.

‘Modern times, new pictures’ is the phrase that sums it all up – a theme focusing on photography as an instrument of modernisation. Museums and cultural institutions, galleries and exhibition organisers have been invited to dedicate their exhibitions to this modernising function of the photographic medium, taking different aspects into account. After all, it has long been a matter of general knowledge that photographs do more than just ‘reproduce reality’. What the camera registers, and the way in which the result is reproduced, is rather a matter of interpretation and so can be seen as the creation of new and additional realities. Several specific fields relating to this theme were proposed to participating institutions by way of example, and all these areas reappear in the festival in the form of historic, and – even more importantly – contemporary samples of the art.

Anyone who wishes can organise the website following these different thematic areas, or bring up a display of the outstanding highlights. For the first time the festival includes a central point – in the form of the Berlinische Galerie – one offering a wide range of events.

The curious visitor can expect to find pictures that are surprising and disturbing, controversial and simply breathtaking. The Fourth European Month of Photography Berlin 2010 is more than just a feast for the eye.

HEROES, FREAKS, AND SUPER-RABBIS THE JEWISH DIMENSION OF COMIC ART

Superman was the work of Jewish cartoonists—as were Batman, Spiderman, and other superheroes of the era. Ever since the comic strip was invented in the immigrant neighborhoods of New York, Jewish artists have played a key role in developing the medium. The exhibition draws on the work of over forty artists to trace the history of Jewish illustrators, scriptwriters and publishers of comics throughout the twentieth century. It presents heroes and anti-heroes, hard-hitting opponents of Hitler, and neurotic petty bourgeois. With over 400 objects on display, it spans an arc from the first superhero comics of the 1930s and 1940s, through the underground scene of the 1960s, to the more challenging literary format of our time, the graphic novel.
Veterans of the medium such as Rube Goldberg, Will Eisner and Harvey Kurtzman are represented along with contemporary artists such as Art Spiegelman, Rutu Modan, Joann Sfar and Ben Katchor by numerous original drawings, sketches, and comic books.

1)  visit the:  TOPOGRAPHIE OF TERROR-Exhibition

It was the center of Nazi terror and power between 1933 and 1945; now this stretch of land next to the Martin Gropius Bau and not far from Potsdamer Platz is dedicated to documenting the chilling and murderous strategies, plans and actions of the Gestapo, SS and security branch of the Third Reich which were all once headquartered here.

Nothing is left of the buildings that once held the offices of these organizations, which were destroyed during Allied bombing in 1945. The Topography of Terrors open-air exhibition runs along the excavation site of the cellars of the Gestapo, where political prisoners were interrogated, tortured and executed.

A preserved 200 meter section of the Berlin Wall can be viewed along one side of the site at Niederkirchnerstrasse. Texts are in German and English; access to the exhibition is available daily until dark. Entry is free, and guided tours and informational talks are provided upon request. A new multi-million euro documentation center is scheduled to open in Spring 2010.

It’s an electronic ALICE IN WONDERLAND special party with lovely surprises, popcorn and a lot of candy floss!

4. Visit an exhibition on Squatting:
SQUATTING. ERINNERN, VERGESSEN, BESETZEN@ TEMPORäRE KUNSTHALLE BERLIN

curated by Tilo Schulz in cooperation with Jörg van den Berg.

squatting shows 22 works by seventeen artists in a format that aims to involve visitors in a mostly serious, sometimes entertaining, but always intense dialog with art. The exhibition takes as its point of departure a form of memory that is not only backward-looking. This active form of remembering—and forgetting—is understood as a need felt by society as a whole, and as one basis for the production and reception of artworks. squatting brings together works which take memory as their theme and focus on experiences with places, situations, people, and actions. The featured artworks occupya space (the Temporäre Kunsthalle) whose location (Schlossplatz) is itself charged with political memories and ideological interventions.

squatting responds to this as a themed group show in which attention centers on encounters between individual artwork and viewer. The exhibition is based on an iconic exhibition practice which artist Tilo Schulz and curator Jörg van den Berg have been developing since the late 1990s. The focus is placed on the presence of the individual artwork, developing a network of connections in terms of form and content between the works on display. Blocked-off and opened spaces, lines of sight and movement emphasize both the differences and the links between the various works: to experience the whole exhibition, visitors must access and leave the Kunsthalle via three different entrances. The space of art (inside) and the space of political memory (outside) remain separate, but are woven together in the visitor’s movement. squatting shapes a specific place that offers visitors a pictorial vocabulary as material for active further processing.
