Last call, exhibition is till 26 February 2012

“If someone says ‘no photos!’ then I try not to take any more. However, before he says that I take as many as I can. That’s the game”. Ron Galella

A paparazzo hunt is cunning, harsh and frequently ends painfully. In the worst case bloodily—including broken jaws and lost teeth. For Ron Galella and his undercover activities, no effort or risk was too great. He proceeded like a detective in order to catch the celebrities in the right moment, patient, persistent, shifty. Whether it was Jacqueline Kennedy, Marlon Brando, Greta Garbo, Andy Warhol, Sean Penn, Robert Redford, Muhammad Ali, Madonna, Mick Jagger or Audrey Hepburn—he managed to get them all in front of his lens. His pictures are snapshots rather than portraits. Spontaneous, not staged, and as a result extremely authentic.

On the occasion of the Berlinale, C/O Berlin will show approximately 140 black/white photographs by Ron Galella.

5. Exhibition @ KW Institute for Contemporary Art

“YOU KILLED ME FIRST The Cinema of Transgression  19.02. – 09.04.2012″
Auguststraße 69
D-10117 Berlin

Karen Finley, Tessa Hughes-Freeland, Richard Kern, Lung Leg, Lydia Lunch, Kembra Pfahler, Casandra Stark, Tommy Turner, David Wojnarowicz, Nick Zedd

There will be blood, shame, pain and ecstasy, the likes of which no one has yet imagined.
Nick Zedd

Nightmarish scenarios of violence, dramatic states of mind, and perverse sexual abysses – the films of the Cinema of Transgression that were consciously aimed at shock, provocation, and confrontation, bear witness to an extraordinary radicality. In the 1980s a group of filmmakers from the Lower East Side in New York went on a collision course with the conventions of American society. Transcending all moral or aesthetic boundaries, the low budget films reveal social hardship met with sociopolitical indifference. Sometimes shot with stolen camera equipment, the films contain strident analyses of life in the Lower East Side defined by criminality, brutality, drugs, AIDS, sex, and excess.

Even though the movement has remained largely unknown, the Cinema of Transgression has been a significant influence for later generations of artists.

YOU KILLED ME FIRST at KW Institute of Contemporary Art in Berlin is the first exhibition on the Cinema of Transgression.

Entry only over 18 years

6. Go out for Dinner, there is a fantastic Vegan Food Restaurant closeby our cozy Hostel in Berlin

It is called KOPPS and is located at the Linienstrasse 94, 10115 Berlin
They serve typical German dishes, but everything is vegan!

7.Berlin Wall documentation center

The Berlin Wall Memorial is the central memorial site of German division, located in the middle of the capital. Situated at the historic site on Bernauer Strasse, it will eventually extend along 1.4 kilometers of the former border strip. The memorial contains the last piece of Berlin Wall with the preserved grounds behind it and is thus able to convey an impression of how the border fortifications developed until the end of the 1980s. The events that took place here together with the preserved historical remnants and traces of border obstacles on display help to make the history of Germany’s division comprehensible to visitors.

Berlin’s Top 5 Music Venues

Monday, October 31st, 2011

This was a difficult list to compile on account of the vast, vast, vast number of quality and iconic music venues in a city brimming with artistic flair and vibrancy. Nevertheless after scouring the streets, leaving no stone unturned, here is a round-up of Berlin’s top five music venues. Feel that we’ve missed something? Let us know, we appreciate your feedback.

Berghain & Panorama Bar
An obvious choice, but without doubt one of the most awe-inspiring clubs in the world, let alone in Berlin, and for good reason. Built just along the former East/West border in Friedrichshain, Berghain is the techno-lover’s Mecca. Every Friday the upstairs Panorama bar opens, housing some of the most prominent electronic artists from across the globe. The door policy can be notoriously picky, but if your vibe is open and your demeanour calm you shouldn’t have any problems. Oh, and no cameras – ever. The memory of your visit will have to suffice, and it just adds to the intrigue, doesn’t it?
Rüdersdorfer Straße 70 10243 Berlin | Tel. 030 29360210 | U-Bahn: Weberweise

Weekend Club (Sky Club)
For those who like their party with a side-order of panoramic views of Berlin, the Weekend Club may well be the perfect location for you. Set on the 12th – 15th floor of a high-rise building in Alexanderplatz, and housing some of the most prominent DJs in the world, the Weekend Club is now three floors of prime party runway with LED displays, a gigantic open air terrace and breathtaking views of the city and beyond.
Alexanderplatz 5 10178 Berlin| Tel.030 24631676 | U-Bahn: Alexanderplatz

One of West Berlin’s oldest and most renowned Jazz clubs, Quasimodo has all the dark and smoky charm of a Mississippi Delta Jazz bar and grill, attracting iconic artists like Roy Hargrove and homegrown talent like Jocelyn B Smith alike. Quasimodo really shine during Black History Month in February when act after act of renowned jazz talent play every evening. Also on the menu is soul, blues, latin and funk on various occasions throughout the year. Jazz fanatics and music fans in general will find a place in their hearts for Quasimodo.
Kantstr. 12a, 10623 Berlin – Charlottenburg | Tel: 312 8086, Fax: 312 24 39 | S+U Zoologischer Garten |

White Trash Fast Food
Do you like a healthy portion of rock and roll with your steak or burger? Then White Trash is the place for you. Regular frequented by rock’n’roll royalty (no less than Lemmy from Motorhead) and Berlin rock hipsters, White Trash is part restaurant and bar and part live music venue, for established acts and newcomers alike. The food is delicious, the atmosphere friendly, and if you’re feeling really brave you can head to the on-site tattoo parlour to mark the occasion! For a more detailed review and an interview with a of a member of staff check out the article on the Oh-Berlin blog. Schönhauser Allee 6/7 10119 Berlin | Tel. 030 50348668 | U-Bahn: Rosa-Luxemburg Platz

For the big acts, and I mean big acts (MJ and the Rolling Stones), Waldbühne is the perfectly whimsical woodland setting. The Waldbühne is a great open air stage, with an amphitheatre feel to it, in a gorgeous green belt near Olympiastadion. A much cosier venue in comparison to other Arena style settings, the acoustics and sound quality is legendary of Waldbühne. Also used as a classical venue and open air cinema in the summer months, the versatility of Waldbüne only adds to its charm.
Am Glockenturm , 14053 Berlin – Charlottenburg | S-Bahn Pichelsberg, U2 Olympia-Stadion |

“A troop of monkeys celebrate a feast, a panther wanders across a snowy Alpine landscape and a pack of white wolves surround a buffalo dripping blood in a manicured French garden. At first glance Walton Ford’s large-scale animal watercolour paintings evoke prints by French and British colonial-era illustrators from the 19th century. After closer examination however, they reveal a pictorial universe of complex and disturbing allusions. The various tigers, lions, birds and primates that populate the life-size pictures appear as vivacious protagonists locked in allegorical struggles. The resulting combination of historical fact, natural history inquiry and surreal imaginings give rise to Walton Ford’s brilliant ‘Bestiarium’.”  from 23.01 till 24.5.2010

Free dinner at the hostel, drinks and pingpong fun at Dr. Pong and then hit up the Kulturbrauerei where there’s always a party!

On a late Saturday morning you should go to where the locals go – the farmer´s market on Kollwitzplatz – 200 Meters from EastSeven. Fresh organic vegetables, varieties of sausages and a lot more of savoir vivre. By your food of the season there, go back to the hostel and prepare it in our fancy self catering kitchen.

If you fancy a shopping spree out in the open, there are plenty of bric-à-brac markets and flea markets to choose from. The best known flea market is on the Strasse des 17. Juni on weekends.

Some other flea markets are on sunday in Mauerpark ( Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg), Arkonaplatz (Berlin-Mitte) or Boxhagener Platz (Berlin-Friedrichshain)

The state opera sells costumes! Hats, coats, pants, skirts, rests of textiles…they have to move for renovations so they’re going to sell everything they don’t need anymore.
