Here is our TOP 10 of Festivals in & around Berlin

1. Fete de la Musique

on the 21st of June, when summer officially starts, there is a big music festival to celebrate it! It is an open air Festival, with a broad variety of music styles and different bands from all over the world.  And the cool thing is, it´s all for FREE.
The festival starts at 16h and there will be a lot of after parties too! Enjoy Berlin at its best!

2. Carneval of Cultures, 10-13 June

Another fantastic yearly event is the Carneval of Kultures ( Karneval der Kulturen) in Berlin Kreuzberg.

The festival presents the cultural and ethnic diversity of Berlin. What to expect? A lot of live performances, there will be bands playing but also street theater performances take place. Not to forget, a lot of delicious food from many different countries, will be prepared for you to try out! It is a very colorful street festival, if you are in Berlin, don´t miss out on this.

The procession takes place on the 12th of June.

3. International Performance Art Festival

From 7. to 21. May 2011, the International Performance Art Festival will take place in Berlin for the fifth time. The Festival is an unique art festival, with workshops, labs and performances, is among the most important platforms for performance art.
Over 100 Berlin and international artists will present themselves in a performance marathon. During the kick-off on May 14 and 15, it will be possible to see what constitutes performance art: spontaneous creativity, confrontation, experiments, in short: artists in real-time.
What takes place can then serve as inspiration for all interested individuals. Performance labs with the artists will give participants the opportunity to pursue their own creative impulses and to present the results to the public in the finale on May 20 and 21.

4. International street theatre Festival `Berlin Lacht`
International Street Theater Festival at Mariannenplatz, 24-26th of June

This is street theatre at his best! Expect the unexpected!

There will be acrobatic, live music, clowns and a lot of more different kinds of performances!

5. Berlin Festival @ former Airport Tempelhof

On the 9th and the 10th of September it is time for some great music and shows at Tempelhof Airport and Club XBerg. It is the music Festival of the year, right in the heart of Berlin, at former Airport Tempelhof. After parties take place at Club XBerg.

6.48 Stunden Neukölln 2011: art festival Neukölln
From 17 – 19 June (Friday 7 pm- Sunday 7 pm) there will be ample opportunities to view or even participate in visual arts, theatre, dance and performance events, readings, guided tours and parties. All this occurs in the streets, parks and other open public spaces in Neukölln, as well as in galleries, theatres, artists’ studios and neighbourhood centres, in cafés and bars, private flats or even in rather unexpected places. This opportunity lasts a mere 48 hours: for these 2 days, everyone can call him- or herself a Neuköllner. Each of the neighbourhoods has its own local “art branch office” or “Kunstfiliale”: Reuterkiez, Flughafenkiez, Richardkiez, Körnerkiez, Schillerkiez, Passagenkiez. The areas in between are referred to here as Anderswo (other locations).

7.Fly BerMuDa Festival at Berlin’s former Tempelhof Airport

will be back for the second time on 5th November giving the Berlin Music Days its glorious finale.

One can expect to be enthralled by the annual gathering of the Crème de la Crème of electronic music artists. The event will be spread across 2 main floor, 2 club floors all backdropped with spectacular visuals, complete with a cozy chillout area.
All this, in the unique and ambient space of Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport.

8. 15. Internationales Berliner Bierfestival
from the 5th till the 7th of August, the Frankfurter Allee in Berlin turns into one big beer event! there will be over 300 different breweries, from 86 different countries, sellling more than 2000 different kinds of beer!

Also there will be some live music! Its the perfect festival to visit in the summer before you go clubbing. There is no entrance fee!

9.DMY international design Festival-01-05 June 2011

The DMY International Design Festival Berlin will anew take place in the impressive architecture of historic city airport Berlin Tempelhof. The central exhibition showcases pioneering and foresighted works by over 500 professional designers, brands and new talents. Reflecting on design as a full circle system, the central exhibition is accompanied by a vast program of satellite exhibitons and events such as Designer Talks, Lectures, Open Design and Material Workshops, an Award Show and numerous networking events.

10. Tanz im August

This is an international Dance Festival. It takes place from August the 12th till August the 28th.
This years programm will be announced in June. Just check their website

A top 10 of amazing things to do in Berlin from friday the 10th of September till sunday the 12th.

1 POPKOMM!!!!

Popkomm 2010 will take place in an extraordinary venue between 8th and 10 th of September – the now decommissioned airport Berlin Tempelhof.
Popkomm is community oriented and opens its doors on 10th September 2010 to the general public. There will be a special program for this day.

In the entrance hall of Airport Tempelhof Popkomm will also install a B2C marketplace which will be open for end consumers between 08 – 11.09.2010. Visitors of the B2C marketplace don’t have to pay admission. Companies who are music related, media partners, etc have the opportunity to present their products and services to the end consumer. B2C marketplace will present an end consumers related program including acoustic showcases and competitions, meet & greets, signature sessions, live broadcastings, music info panels, pre-listening sessions, etc.

The Popkomm Showcase Festival: From 8 to 10 September 2010 there will be around 60 showcases at Airport Berlin Tempelhof at several venues.

NEW: DayShowCases @ Popkomm Airport Berlin Tempelhof: exclusive showcase events taking place during the daytime.

7 ÖKOMARKT AM KOLLWITZPLATZ

On a late Saturday morning you should go to where the locals go – the farmer´s market on Kollwitzplatz – 200 Meters from EastSeven. Fresh organic vegetables, varieties of sausages and a lot more of savoir vivre. By your food of the season there, go back to the hostel and prepare it in our fancy self catering kitchen.

8 SUNDAY FLEAMARKETDAY

FLEAMARKET Mauerpark

Sunday is fleamarket day. Close to the hostel (500 m)you find the Arkonaplatz Fleamarket and the famous Mauerpark fleamarket. You don´t want to buy something – no problem you first of all go there to see all kind of urban subjects with hangover and even sober ones. Berliners go there – you should as well.

Coming to Berlin for the great music scene, then you are more than happy visiting berlin this week!
There is music and events going on every where.
A bunch of great dj´s, bands and artists are coming to berlin to perform and to make the city dance!
There is the popkomm international music market at the former airport tempelhof. Popkomm´s showcase festival takes place on the 8th and 9th of september and will present some of the most interesting and talented artists from all over the world. The Tempelhof Airport Complex is also the venue for the Berlin Festival (10th and 11th of September). This Festival takes place for the 5th time and has an amazing line up: Editors, Fatboy Slim, Atari Teenage Riot, Robyn,toomanydj´s and many many more. 10 artists on the Berlin Festival Line Up are presented by the Popkomm as promising new-comer acts.

At the Kulturbrauerei, in Berlin´s vivid Neigbourhood Prenzlauerberg, the JAZZKOMM takes place. Some great jazzmusicians will perform at the Franzz club. For a line up and more details check here
Saturday night, 11th of September is your change to experience Berlin´s Nightlife to the maximum. It´s the Berlin clubnight that gives one the opportunity to visit many clubs, paying only once 12€ entrance fee. There are shuttle busses driving you from one club to another! this must be heaven!

2. NEUE NATIONALGALERIE: PICTURE DREAMS

The Pietzsch Collection ranks as one of the internationally most significant collections of Surrealist art, with principle works by André Breton, Salvador Dalí, Paul Delvaux, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Joan Miró, André Masson and Yves Tanguy, as well as numerous works by other artists more broadly connected to the Surrealist movement.

A second important core aspect to the collection lies in works by the Abstract Expressionists in America, whose art movement rose directly from the roots of Surrealism to flourish in the New York of the nineteen-fifties. Works by important figures who have since become legends in their own right, such as Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman are all represented in the collection together with works by the great Mexicans Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.
3. 20 JAHRE MAUERFALL: ZEITREISEN – PRENZLAUER BERG 1979-1989-1999

The exhibition presents works from internationally prominent artists who concern themselves with the changes to the architectural and urban structure of Berlin.

On June 8th, Berlin’s biggest and without doubt most beautiful “sand pit” is going to open its gates for the sixth time at the Berliner Hauptbahnhof.
5. 13. INTERNATIONAL BERLIN BEER FESTIVAL
From the 7th till the 9th of august the Karl Marx Allee turns in to the longest beer garden worldwide. the traditional beer mile in the centre of Berlin is going to have “ beer land Belgium offers the very best “ as its motto.

7. LE CORBUSIER  ART AND ARCHITECTURE (EXHIBITION)

Le Corbusier (1887–1965) is considered to be one of the most significant architects of the 20th century. His work continues to exert a considerable influence on architecture and town planning to this day. This exhibition includes original paintings, sculptures, numerous original pieces of furniture, original drawings and plans, first editions of Le Corbusier’s books plus numerous small objects from the architect’s private collection, which he used for purposes of inspiration, orientation and demonstration.

8. BADESCHIFF

Go for a swim!! The Badeschiff in Berlin is the most extraordinairy swimming pool in Europe. It is drifting on the river spree!
9. MONTAGSBAR AT TEMPORäRE KUNSTHALLE

In theory, each artist of the Artists-in-Berlin Program of the DAAD will be responsible for one Monday evening (from July 13 to August 31). In practice, there will be overlaps and collaborations with other Berlin-based artists and guest appearances. We will let ourselves be surprised by the artists’ DJ performances and styles of music. And if the weather is nice, there will be a outside on the terrace along the canel!
10. FLEAMARKET
