Museum Island in winter

Things to do in Berlin in December!

Yeah, visit Berlin in WINTER! We already had the first snow of the year, it was beautiful.
With this blog post we would like to give you some ideas on what to do in Berlin in December. Read on and plan your trip to Berlin right away!

1.    Visit one of the many Christmas Markets
You can read in our previous blog post on Berlin Christmas markets about where the coolest Christmas markets are and what their opening hours are. Have fun Christmas shopping and don´t forget to try the Glühwein (Mulled Wine).

2.    Go to one of the many Museums

In this cold season, it is on some days better to stay inside. Why not visit as many museums as you can with the museum day pass! From the Allied Museum to the Zucker Museum (Sugar Museum) – the popular 3-day Berlin Museum Pass opens the doors to a number of the city’s big museums, as well as a few insider’s tips. From impressive works of art, archaeological treasures from six thousand years of human history and touching historical monuments to technical inventions and interactive experiments for the whole family. For €19,00 (reduced €9,50), the museum pass guarantees free admission for all Berlin visitors on three consecutive days.

3.    Find a good place for your Christmas Dinner

Some suggestions, SchusterJunge, Schneeweisschen & Rosenrot, Schwarzwaldstuben- these 3 restaurants are all serving the finest German food you can imagine. Make sure to reserve a table way ahead though! If you need help and advice, just come ask us at the hostel reception.
If you don´t want to eat out you can buy your own food and prepare a  delicious meal at the hostel kitchen! We have a cozy full equipped kitchen, feel free to use it during your stay!

4.    Christmas parties!
Go dance the night away on Christmas. A lot of clubs are open and dancing is the perfect way to burn all the calories after eating way too much on Christmas again.
Some cool clubs where you can go to:
Kaffee Burger: just around the corner from the EastSeven Berlin Hostel. Go here if you like electro & indie pop.
Bassy Cowboy Club: Christmas swing party, with music from the 60ties!

5. Visit the Neue Nationalgalerie
Following Exhibition is on from now till- Late 1. Quarter 2013
Divided Heaven.
1945 – 1968. The Collection. Neue Nationalgalerie

After ‘Modern Times. The Collection 1900-1945′, the second instalment in the showing of the National Gallery’s collection of 20th-century art will go on display in November 2011.

Germany’s ‘economic miracle’ and the building of the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Crisis and Vietnam War, Sputnik and Apollo, Kennedy and Mao-stark contrasts, entrenched positions and clear fronts mark the eventful years between 1945 and 1968. Fine art from this period was significantly influenced by the atmosphere of the ‘Cold War’ and the political ideologies connected with it. In art, two major paths essentially separated East and West, the figurative and abstraction. The West held aloft the open structure of abstract or ‘informal’ art as a symbol of freedom. And it was certainly no coincidence that the pop art that followed it arose in the major capitals of the West, where the phenomena of mass production and a rising tide of consumer culture were everywhere to be seen. In the Eastern Block, by contrast, socialist realism became the prevailing trend and a defining basis for all developments in the art that came after it. In all of this, the individual became the point by which all things were measured, artists made the ‘human condition’ the core focus of their work.

Under the title ‘Divided Heaven’ (echoing the novel by Christa Wolf), the New National Gallery introduces us to the key figures from this epoch. In its focus, however, the exhibition deliberately looks beyond barriers, geopolitical and artistic, and concentrates instead on universal artistic ideas, held by both camps at once. At the heart of ‘Divided Heaven’ stand the international disparities: the juxtaposition of styles and art forms, the contemporaneity of the non-contemporaneous.

The exhibition is sponsored by the Sparkassen Finanzgruppe..

Party in Berlin

Kanns weiter gehen.

Berlin’s Top 5 Music Venues

Monday, October 31st, 2011

This was a difficult list to compile on account of the vast, vast, vast number of quality and iconic music venues in a city brimming with artistic flair and vibrancy. Nevertheless after scouring the streets, leaving no stone unturned, here is a round-up of Berlin’s top five music venues. Feel that we’ve missed something? Let us know, we appreciate your feedback.

Berghain & Panorama Bar
An obvious choice, but without doubt one of the most awe-inspiring clubs in the world, let alone in Berlin, and for good reason. Built just along the former East/West border in Friedrichshain, Berghain is the techno-lover’s Mecca. Every Friday the upstairs Panorama bar opens, housing some of the most prominent electronic artists from across the globe. The door policy can be notoriously picky, but if your vibe is open and your demeanour calm you shouldn’t have any problems. Oh, and no cameras – ever. The memory of your visit will have to suffice, and it just adds to the intrigue, doesn’t it?
Rüdersdorfer Straße 70 10243 Berlin | Tel. 030 29360210 | U-Bahn: Weberweise

Weekend Club (Sky Club)
For those who like their party with a side-order of panoramic views of Berlin, the Weekend Club may well be the perfect location for you. Set on the 12th – 15th floor of a high-rise building in Alexanderplatz, and housing some of the most prominent DJs in the world, the Weekend Club is now three floors of prime party runway with LED displays, a gigantic open air terrace and breathtaking views of the city and beyond.
Alexanderplatz 5 10178 Berlin| Tel.030 24631676 | U-Bahn: Alexanderplatz

Quasimodo-by-Olivier-Bruchez_flickr.jpg

Quasimodo
One of West Berlin’s oldest and most renowned Jazz clubs, Quasimodo has all the dark and smoky charm of a Mississippi Delta Jazz bar and grill, attracting iconic artists like Roy Hargrove and homegrown talent like Jocelyn B Smith alike. Quasimodo really shine during Black History Month in February when act after act of renowned jazz talent play every evening. Also on the menu is soul, blues, latin and funk on various occasions throughout the year. Jazz fanatics and music fans in general will find a place in their hearts for Quasimodo.
Kantstr. 12a, 10623 Berlin – Charlottenburg | Tel: 312 8086, Fax: 312 24 39 | S+U Zoologischer Garten |

Inside-White-Trash-Fast-Food-by-Philippe-AMIOT_flickr

White Trash Fast Food
Do you like a healthy portion of rock and roll with your steak or burger? Then White Trash is the place for you. Regular frequented by rock’n’roll royalty (no less than Lemmy from Motorhead) and Berlin rock hipsters, White Trash is part restaurant and bar and part live music venue, for established acts and newcomers alike. The food is delicious, the atmosphere friendly, and if you’re feeling really brave you can head to the on-site tattoo parlour to mark the occasion! For a more detailed review and an interview with a of a member of staff check out the article on the Oh-Berlin blog. Schönhauser Allee 6/7 10119 Berlin | Tel. 030 50348668 | U-Bahn: Rosa-Luxemburg Platz

Chris1002x_flickr

Waldbühne
For the big acts, and I mean big acts (MJ and the Rolling Stones), Waldbühne is the perfectly whimsical woodland setting. The Waldbühne is a great open air stage, with an amphitheatre feel to it, in a gorgeous green belt near Olympiastadion. A much cosier venue in comparison to other Arena style settings, the acoustics and sound quality is legendary of Waldbühne. Also used as a classical venue and open air cinema in the summer months, the versatility of Waldbüne only adds to its charm.
Am Glockenturm , 14053 Berlin – Charlottenburg | S-Bahn Pichelsberg, U2 Olympia-Stadion |

Party in Berlin

Party in Berlin

No plans for the weekend? We have selected some cool events and things to do for the weekend!

On Friday during the day:

1 THE BERLIN WALL MEMORIAL: GEDENKSTäTTE BERLINER MAUER

The Documentation Centre known as Dokumentationszentrum Berliner Mauer is one of three integral elements which together make up the Gedenkstatte Berliner Mauer – Berlin Wall Monument at Bernauer Strasse – combining a stretch of the former Berlin Wall, the Kapelle der Versöhnung (Reconciliation Chapel) and, across the road, the Documentation Centre itself.

This is an important source of information and an original documentary source/archive devoted to the history of the Berlin Wall. A multimedia presentation draws on the local historical experience at Bernauer Strasse, exploring varied aspects of the political background and historical detail surrounding one of the most poignant and significant events of the Cold War.

The street’s unique position cut into two sides by the Wall with East Berlin buildings on one side and a pavement/sidewalk on the side of West Berlin evoked the madness of the concrete Wall dividing the city.

Information panels are in German and English.

Address:
Bernauer Str. 111
13355 Berlin

Admission free!!!

15mins walk from East Seven

On Friday night:

Tours of the prison are usually led by former inmates, who provide first-hand details on prison conditions and the interrogation methods employed by the GDR’s Ministry of State Security (MfS).

It is only possible to view the extensive prison complex on a official guided tour as Visitors require detailed guidance in order to understand the various sections of the prison.

9 VISIT THE EXHIBITION ´LIVE TO TAPE´ AT THE HAMBURGER BAHNHOF

Live to Tape.

The Mike Steiner Collection at Hamburger Bahnhof
1 February 2011 – 8 January 2012

From the beginning of the 1970s, gallerist, collector and artist Mike Steiner was one of the earliest proponents of the young medium of video art in West Germany. Inspired by several trips to New York, where he came into contact with developments in video and action art, he opened the Studiogalerie in the vicinity of Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm in 1976. The gallery soon became one of the defining exhibition spaces for Berlin media artists, who had received little attention before, as well as presenting international pioneers in video art and performance.

The exhibition “Live to Tape” presents a selection of works from the Mike Steiner Collection in the Nationalgalerie holdings spanning the years 1972-1985. It traces directions in early video art; in particular, the relationship between live performance and video is brought into focus as in taped endurance performances that test the physical limits of the body by Marina Abramović, Charlemagne Palestine and Ulrike Rosenbach. Also on view is a group of works from the rarely shown action Hotel Room Event, organized by Fluxus artist Ben Vautier and Mike Steiner. During the event fifteen artist videos were taped in different rooms of the Hotel Steiner. Another highlight is Ulay’s spectacular action There is a Criminal Touch to Art (1976), documenting his temporary theft of the Carl Spitzweg painting The Poor Poet (1839) from the Neue Nationalgalerie.

Artists included in the exhibition: Marina Abramović, Cornelia (jetzt Kali) Balcerowiak, Wojciech Bruszewski, Valie Export, Jochen Gerz, K.H. Hödicke, Dorothy Iannone, Joan Jonas, Raimund Kummer, Joan La Barbara, Charlemagne Palestine, Friederike Pezold, Lil Picard, Ulrike Rosenbach, Mike Steiner, Endre Tót, Ulay, Ben Vautier, Helmut Wietz.

Put on your dancing shoes because Villa is once again opening its gates to the party inferno that AWESOME nights bring and, of course, mark it’s season opening after a long summer break!

Our headliner KID SISTER (Fools Gold) comes all the way from the windy city, Chicago where she is at the frontline of a new way to view dance music, house and hip-hop all mixed in one bowl. As so many times before, the Chicago music scene keeps surprising and innovating. She will perform a live set with support from Chicago-ite WILLY JOY who, among many other achievements, got into URB’s “Top 100 artists to watch 2010″.

To back her up, we brought in the heaviest bass you can find in all of Poland, thats right kids, we got SUPRA1 in the house. Just signed to the infamous Trouble & Bass label in NYC, their very special genre bending dubstep is sure to bring some bass in your face.

Further more we have the crunkest DJ in Berlin, the Stockholm native SHIBIE (Nordic by Nature) to get your booties shaking and get you crazy drunk!

For those of you who appreciate the good old 4/4, our upstairs room will provide you with fantastic, groovy, percussive and, of course, awesome house and techno.

We have the debut from Stadthund and Cinthie called DAS CHRISTL (Rafiger / Awesome) and we are all very excited to hear what’s in their magic sound bag.

Wait! There will be another debut, and this one from up ‘n coming tech house heroes TRICUS & GOLDSTEIN (Awesome). These partners in crime are sure to move and shake you and make you want to hear more.

As if that’s not enough, we have FUNKENSTRØM (Symbiont) to impress you with his intelligent and very personal sound.

We also have a big surprise for you, consider it a cherry on top! It is a special guest from Dirtybird who will destroy the dance floor in the best way possible, of course…
