events in berlin

Just some great parties and things to do in Berlin, all events were recommended by the EastSeven Hostel STAFF!!

Parties and events on Friday the 15th of April
1. ACHTUNG BERLIN – NEW BERLIN FILM AWARD 2011
The Film Festival of New German Cinema from Berlin-Brandenburg
From April 13-20, 2011, Berlins third biggest film festival achtung berlin – new berlin film award will again present new motion pictures, documentaries and short films which have been produced or shot in Berlin-Brandenburg.

With a focus on film creation in the German capital city region, the film festival has made an unmistakable and distinctive mark on the film landscape. In the meantime, achtung berlin – new berlin film award has become the third-largest film festival in Berlin (next to the famous “Berlinale”), attracting a lot of attention from moviegoers and film professionals alike.

Annually, the festival presents around 70 contemporary feature and documentary films that have been either partially or completely made with a film production, producer or director in Berlin or Brandenburg – among these are numerous premieres held at the new berlin film award before their official theatrical release!

The variety of different genres and themes couldn’t be better with a combination of promising films from a new generation of film makers, artistic, low-budget films presented with award-winning productions and international co-productions. From documentary dramas and auteur films to thriller, horror zombie and splatter films and feel-good-movies – achtung berlin will present the pearls and unknown secrets of the current film year.

The competition is topped off with a retrospective and various film series:

The beloved documentary film section of “Homeland Documentaries” is devoted to selected documentary films, which define the term “homeland” very differently – with a strong local color, but also in the figurative sense.

The film festival achtung berlin – new berlin film award has created a yearly retrospective with a focus on actual events that reflect a rich film history. In the last three years, a retrospective has been created with the city of Berlin with numerous inside perspectives.

einzustreuen.

because everybody can’t get enough of anybody!
We say: Don’t stop me now, oh Johnny!
If someone is trotting out now: Man, I doesn’t want to go yet, I want
to dance with somebody, we ask him what this has to do with Whitney
actually??
Aren’t we all Californian girls on the highway to the hell anyhow??
And why does it smell like teenager spirit in here??
Find out … at the Astra… at PARTY PARTY HITS HITS and always stay
sober, because, otherwise, there comes the prison rock.

5. LONG NIGHT OF THE OPERA AND THEATRE

off to an individual, unique night of theatre!

For the 3rd Long Night of Opera and Theatre there are 60 venues and over 200 productions to choose from, spanning opera, dance, theatre, chanson, classical and popular music, literature, cabaret, puppets, youth theatre, improvisation and acrobatics.

The programme includes both sections of current repertoires and programmes specially assembled for the Long Night. Anyone who thinks they have seen everything the Berlin stage has to offer or been to every cutting-edge venue has a surprise in store at the Long Night of Opera and Theatre. Or have you already experienced an underwater opera? For those who would rather take part than watch there are opportunities for this too, whether in improtheatre, as a criminalist or at the Neuköllner Parade. Let yourself be inspired by Schillers motto: “man is only really complete when he is acting…”

Simply plan your own theatre evening and we’ll take you there, with shuttle buses following seven different routes.

The programme runs from 7pm – 1am, and with performances lasting approx. 30mins each, there is plenty of time to catch many different shows over the night with just the one ticket. What better way to get to know the theatre? Maybe you’ll combine a first night at the opera with a spot of cabaret, check out the action behind the scenes and then watch a live rehearsal! Astonishing discoveries of venues, genres and performers are guaranteed- and not just for tourists and theatre-novices; Berliners and regular theatre-goers are bound to be impressed by the night’s exclusive line-up.

That´s all for now! Hope you enjoy your visit to Berlin! If you need more insider information just come ask it at the reception OR check out our online recommendations!

Party in Berlin

Party in Berlin

No plans for the weekend? We have selected some cool events and things to do for the weekend!

On Friday during the day:

1 THE BERLIN WALL MEMORIAL: GEDENKSTäTTE BERLINER MAUER

The Documentation Centre known as Dokumentationszentrum Berliner Mauer is one of three integral elements which together make up the Gedenkstatte Berliner Mauer – Berlin Wall Monument at Bernauer Strasse – combining a stretch of the former Berlin Wall, the Kapelle der Versöhnung (Reconciliation Chapel) and, across the road, the Documentation Centre itself.

This is an important source of information and an original documentary source/archive devoted to the history of the Berlin Wall. A multimedia presentation draws on the local historical experience at Bernauer Strasse, exploring varied aspects of the political background and historical detail surrounding one of the most poignant and significant events of the Cold War.

The street’s unique position cut into two sides by the Wall with East Berlin buildings on one side and a pavement/sidewalk on the side of West Berlin evoked the madness of the concrete Wall dividing the city.

Information panels are in German and English.

Address:
Bernauer Str. 111
13355 Berlin

Admission free!!!

15mins walk from East Seven

On Friday night:

Tours of the prison are usually led by former inmates, who provide first-hand details on prison conditions and the interrogation methods employed by the GDR’s Ministry of State Security (MfS).

It is only possible to view the extensive prison complex on a official guided tour as Visitors require detailed guidance in order to understand the various sections of the prison.

9 VISIT THE EXHIBITION ´LIVE TO TAPE´ AT THE HAMBURGER BAHNHOF

Live to Tape.

The Mike Steiner Collection at Hamburger Bahnhof
1 February 2011 – 8 January 2012

From the beginning of the 1970s, gallerist, collector and artist Mike Steiner was one of the earliest proponents of the young medium of video art in West Germany. Inspired by several trips to New York, where he came into contact with developments in video and action art, he opened the Studiogalerie in the vicinity of Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm in 1976. The gallery soon became one of the defining exhibition spaces for Berlin media artists, who had received little attention before, as well as presenting international pioneers in video art and performance.

The exhibition “Live to Tape” presents a selection of works from the Mike Steiner Collection in the Nationalgalerie holdings spanning the years 1972-1985. It traces directions in early video art; in particular, the relationship between live performance and video is brought into focus as in taped endurance performances that test the physical limits of the body by Marina Abramović, Charlemagne Palestine and Ulrike Rosenbach. Also on view is a group of works from the rarely shown action Hotel Room Event, organized by Fluxus artist Ben Vautier and Mike Steiner. During the event fifteen artist videos were taped in different rooms of the Hotel Steiner. Another highlight is Ulay’s spectacular action There is a Criminal Touch to Art (1976), documenting his temporary theft of the Carl Spitzweg painting The Poor Poet (1839) from the Neue Nationalgalerie.

Artists included in the exhibition: Marina Abramović, Cornelia (jetzt Kali) Balcerowiak, Wojciech Bruszewski, Valie Export, Jochen Gerz, K.H. Hödicke, Dorothy Iannone, Joan Jonas, Raimund Kummer, Joan La Barbara, Charlemagne Palestine, Friederike Pezold, Lil Picard, Ulrike Rosenbach, Mike Steiner, Endre Tót, Ulay, Ben Vautier, Helmut Wietz.

Our wintertime TOP 10 of Events in Berlin

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Berlin!

Berlin!

The EastSeven Berlin Hostel made you an amazing top 10 of cost-free activities and events in Berlin this winter.

Berlin is an exciting capitol, where lots of events are being organized all through the year. Some of these events are free of admission.
So if you are traveling on a low budget, like a lot of backpackers staying in hostels do, read on! You will be able to have a great time in berlin without spending too much money :) .

1. Visit the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum.
When visiting Berlin, you should visit some historical sites aswell. for instance the sachsenhausen concentration camp. It’ s not going to be a fun trip, but you will learn so much more about the terrible second world war and its victims.
Opening Hours: 15 October until 14 March: daily 8:30 – 16:30. Entry is for free.
2. Visit the Mauerpark fleamarket, every sunday! You will find a lot of nice bargains there! Besides that, there is food, music and a lot of young people enjoying a lazy sunday together! The market is within walking distance from the hostel.
3. EastSide Gallery, is a 1.3km-long section of the wall near the center of Berlin. Approximately 106 paintings by artists from all over the world cover this memorial for freedom and make it the largest open air gallery in the world.

4. The Berlin Wall Documentation Centre is one component of the memorial site ensemble at Bernauer Strasse. The ensemble consists of the Berlin Wall Memorial, the Chapel of Reconciliation and Documentation Center.
The Documentation Center on the history of the Berlin Wall provides historical information and educates the public. It makes information and in-depth programs available to the interested public. Beginning with the historical, political events that occurred at Bernauer Strasse, an area situated at the border between East and West and hence a focal point of German postwar history, the center researches and presents the history of the division of Germany. A visit is free of charge and really worthwhile!
5. Ping pong bar, Dr. Pong, at the Eberswalder straße. You pay a deposit of 5€ to get a bat , and then you just start playing table tennis with evryone that is there! Its definately a great deal of FUN!
6. Don´t miss out on the monday & wednesday evening cooking events at the EastSeven Hostel. The food is for free, it´s vegetarian and 100% delicious. Our cook Florian makes the best food in town! Its also a nice opportunity to meet up with other travelers.
7. Go on a walking tour to visit all important sights in Berlin. Just take the Brewers walking tour, they come to pick you up every day at 12.45 from our hostel.
8. The stasi prison in Berlin Hohenschönhausen is free of admission on mondays. The Memorial’s charter specifically entrusts it with the task of researching the history of the Hohenschönhausen prison between 1945 and 1989, supplying information via exhibitions, events and publications, and encouraging a critical awareness of the methods and consequences of political persecution and suppression in the communist dictatorship. The former Stasi remand prison is also intended to provide an insight into the workings of the GDR’s political justice system.
Since the vast majority of the buildings, equipment and furniture and fittings have survived intact, the Memorial provides a very authentic picture of prison conditions in the GDR. The Memorial’s location in Germany’s capital city makes it the key site in Germany for victims of communist tyranny.
9. Holocaust Memorial. Berlins ultra-controversial memorial for the murdered Jews of Europe, 2,711 concrete blocks jutting off at offensive and suffocating angles. Co-incidentally only a stones throw away from the site of Adolf Hitlers former underground lair, the Führerbunker.
10.Reichstag – The German parliament building,
re-opened in 1999 after the government and most of the ministries moved from Bonn to Berlin. British architect Lord Norman Foster redesigned this place, complete with a huge glass dome with public access, so you can watch the politicians at work.

events in berlin

A fine selection of parties and events is presented here.

Just to keep you informed and up to date, we post a blog on parties and events every now and then! Our focus today is the coming up weekend, from December 17, till December 19!
We created a top 10 of amazing things to do this weekend. Enjoy your stay in Berlin :)

On Friday:

1.FORMULA_X: ECOSISTEMA URBANO LOOKING THROUGH ECOSISTEMA URBANO EYES

ecosistema urbano’ s name is program: Their projects combine architecture, urbanism, engineering and sociology to strive for a ‘creative urban sustainability’. The focus of their work is on the complex phenomenon of the city, which they react to (or activate) through innovative, creative and holistic interventions. The interdisciplinary office from Madrid is an international consultant on sustainable urban development for cities and regions. Public space is thereby a central issue : ecosistema urbano catalyses urban processes that help citizens to change their own environment through proactive interventions.

The work of ecosistema urbano defines new boundaries of the profession of architecture and urban planning: They are moderators, develop strategies, systems and social media interfaces for a spurring on urbanity. With their own social network, blog and web – TV, ecosistema urbano offers various platforms to bring people together and to share knowledge about sustainable urban development and ideas for the city.

Designing processes and situations where the relations between people can be optimized is ecosistema urbano’ s key to a successful project.
Their exhibition at the DAZ will visualize, through a classical 3 D optical system, the process and strategies for a selection of recent works.
